Methodologies

An active learning methodology is an approach to learning that is participatory and provides the means for facilitating relevant discussion and learning about an issue. It is student centred and invites the student to take a more active role in the process of learning. The teacher is no longer seen as the role expert but more as a facilitator of what is being learned. The student learns by actively engaging in an activity and is encouraged to reflect on what has been learned during the process.

Relevant active methodologies for work on citizenship and human rights are those methodologies that are demanding insofar as they involve both teachers and students in the exploration of controversial issues in a frank and sensitive way. This leads to meaningful interaction within or between groups.
